The competition for the metro extensions to Piraeus is moving to its second phase as the auction issues will be handed out next week by «Attico Metro» in order to receive financial offers from interested companies.
The competition that was announced in 2006 is being unblocked since the accusations against the «Aktor»- «Siemens» collaboration by the «Mechaniki» Commission have been withdrawn. The competition was canceled by the previous administration of the ministry of the Environment and re-tendered in 2008 but due to the scandal with the German company, it got swamped. But sources from «Attico Metro» claim that its participation was indirect as it involves electromechanical facilities.
The extension of Line 3 to the west suburbs with Piraeus as the final destination includes an underground tunnel of 7,6 klm and six modern stations (Agia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus, State Theatre) estimated to serve 160.000 passengers.
Since February 2009, six technical groups have declared their interest in the construction of the project, which is anticipated to start in 2011. It is estimated that the offer issuing will commence in about a month and a half so the contract will have been signed by next summer.
