The second officer is dead

Just before 10pm the second policeman passed away after being hit in the head by a bullet.

Earlier, another of the 4 attacked officers had died in the state hospital of Nikaia. According to sources, the other two are out of danger.

It all started 10 minutes before 7pm when DI.AS. officers tried to check on a suspicious Volvo SUV at the side road on the national highway at Renti. They were tipped that the passengers of a vehicle that had been stolen were involved in a robbery of a kiosk in Menidi. But the driver not only ignored the signal, but also accelerated and tried to escape, which led to a pursuit.

Two of the passengers opened fire with their Kalashnikovs and the vehicle was lost in the streets of the area. Just after 8pm it was found somewhere around the area and according to sources, in it were the weapons with which the criminals fired at the officers.

Speaking from Ankara on NET News, Citizen Protection minister Chr. Papoutsis said he was devastated and did not exclude the possibility of a terrorist attack. According to him, the Kalashnikovs and the way they were used «amount to serious indication as they are only used by organized crime groups or terrorists. We are in constant communication with vice minister Othonas and the Hellenic Police leader Oikonomou, who at this time are at the hospital in Nikaia. We are watching closely and I want to tell you that I am personally shocked because it is a blood cycle that some insist on perpetuating» he said.
