We won't be paying when we return!

All drivers will be paying the expensive toll fares now that they are leaving, but will return for free since on Sunday March 27 passage will be free after the decision of the Panhellenic Fight Committees to open the toll bars along the national highways after 4pm.

They support that “the effort of the government to make all non-payers pay has not succeeded and we will be going to the European Parliament to report this illegal act of giving national roads over to multinational companies, and especially the expenditure of public money and the scandal of shady contracts”.

The committees are reacting against the “despicable” legislation that Mr.Reppas has passed, according to which all non-payers are fined and charged with an offense on their licence, saying that even though it is now a law, there are thousands of drivers that refuse to pay.

This decision comes at a time when the government is trying to solve this non-paying problem, proven by Minister Reppas' announcement in the Russian media that there is going to be a 50% discount in toll fares, which is a first since no other Minister or member of the government has publicly adopted any position on the issue of the tolls.

In he past few months the road works have been halted and the companies have been firing staff piecemeal. The difficulties described by Mr.Reppas imply that some works (especially Olympia Odos) might stop completely, since banks are refusing to help out.

Sources from the Ministry say the work will be completed at least up to Patras and possiblyPyrgos.

In reference to the toll fares being cut, this will for sure include people living next to the tolls that need to use them all the time and discounts for trucks and lorries, as well as for drivers who are frequent users.
