of the European Council at the emergency summit on March 11th» said the
PM at the press conference
after the conclusion of the summit in Brussels, clearly satisfied.
«Nothing was given to us for free. We reached this decision with our steady effort. We reached this decision with the strengthening of our country’s prestige and building up the necessary alliances», the PM said. He noted that Greece highlighted the size of the problem and that the government was vindicated by the developments in Portugal and Libya, for its insistence on a decision on issues of Greek interest on March 11th
He also noted that that the funding of the temporary and permanent mechanisms is confirmed, and that the aim is to sign the relevant decisions by the end of June.
The PM stressed that the crucial message from this summit is that the EU is here to help the countries of the Eurozone. At the same time, he expressed his expectation that these decisions will calm the markets and boost the Greek effort for an economical upturn.
Answering the question on the possibility of new measures by the pact on the euro, he said that Greece has already implemented most of the changes.
However, when he was asked about the utilisation of state property and the need for privatizations, both of which have come up against considerable opposition, Papandreou said that the government doesn’t have a proposal for PPC, and that it is in the best interest of all Greeks to cooperate. He clarified that there will be consultation and program specialization.
