Despite the efforts of doctors at the Aghia Sophia Children's hospital,
the 7-year-old boy that was seriously injured in the face by a
firecracker ended up losing his left eye.
The unfortunate boy has been hospitalized in critical condition and is struggling to remain alive, without having escaped danger.
The 26-year-old perpetrator who was arrested and will arrive at the First Instance Court of Chalkis today, admitted that he had triggered a navy-type flare coupled with its parachute! The explosive went off in front of the main entrance of the church where the boy and his parents were, causing the boy to suffer severe injuries to the face and head. The child was initially taken to the hospital of Chalkis, but due to the seriousness of his condition, he was immediately transported by ambulance to Athens, where he was immediately taken to surgery.
An 11-year-old boy was lucky to avoid injury in Gazio, Crete, when he ignited two pieces of fireworks secretly obtained by a 12- year-old friend of his from her mother. The fireworks exploded prematurely, and while he was being moved to the hospital, police arrested the 34-year-old mother of the girl for neglect of a minor.
Unfortunately, the use of fireworks was fatal for two young men from Rhodes, who lost their lives while they were constructing them. A 39-year-old farmer and a 30-year-old heavy machinery operator were killed instantly by the explosion.
The tragedy came close to becoming incredible in its proportions. Shortly before the tragic accident which claimed the two lives, the 39-year-old had removed his children, who had been visiting him to see how the fireworks were being prepared, from the site.
The 30-year-old was also a father of two. According to the police, he allegedly obtained the capsules, dynamite and fuses from a quarry where he worked. The explosive materials caused the instant death of both friends, and have been sent to the Athens police for further investigation.

Evidence so far has led police to believe that the explosion occurred due to human error. Nevertheless, the on-site investigation into the tragedy continues, while the funerals of both friends will take place on Tuesday.
