Thanasis Veggos, the “good man” of the Greek cinema has lost the battle for his life. The beloved successful actor, by peers and public alike, passed away at 7:10 this morning in the Erythros Stavros hospital in Athens, where he was being treated.

He “departed” at the age of 84, discreetly, just as he lived all his life, despite being closely besieged, especially lately, by cameras and reporters. Quiet, almost shrinking from people, Thanasis Veggos is the last of his generation that gave post-war Greece abundant laughter. He avoided interviews and in his few public appearances, reporters were literally hanging from his lips.

A good family man, a good professional and a good colleague he devoted himself to cinema almost ignoring television, which he honored only a few times with his presence. Thanasis Veggos, our Thanasis, did not study acting; he was self-taught.

He was a worshipped comedian and acted in 126 movies, 52 of which as a protagonist, while he directed (in addition to leading) seven more movies.
