The FCU is targeting the Greeks’ habit to not ask for receipts, and has launched an attack against freelancers who, despite the fact that pensions are being cut and the country is flirting with bankruptcy, insist on hiding their real income to avoid thousands of euros in taxes

Characteristic of the severity with which the audits are being carried out is that 1 in 2 freelancers were caught having committed serious tax offences. Not only that: according to data presented by the Finance ministry, tax violations asserted by the FCU have increased by 6.406% within 2009-2010 while the auditors proceeded to opening the bank accounts of 1.875 freelancers.

Specifically, the FCU has opened the bank accounts of 481 doctors, 209 lawyers, and 1041 accounts of other professions. In several cases, their findings were more than astounding.

A gynecologist declared an income of 373.331 euros for the same period, while his accounts received deposits of 1.045.526 euros.

During 2004-2009, a cardiothoracic surgeon declared a total net income of 399.009 euros with his bank accounts showing deposits of 3.816.821 euros.

For the period of 2000-2010, the bank accounts of an NHS doctor in Larisa reached 4.300.000 euros.
