“Memorandum no 2 for you? Zappeion no 2 for us!”

The ND leadership will use “Zappeion no 2”, as they call their updated economy proposal, and will present it this Thursday, to respond to the new challenges created by the secret meeting in Luxembourg last Friday.

In the wake of the meeting of the European Union’s economy specialists, ND watches with concern the return and intensification of the pressure to provide support to a second memorandum, while early election scenarios are being rekindled.

Samaras’ associates estimate that this blame game brings forth the extortionate dilemma that if their party does not consent to the new memorandum, they will have to take responsibility for the cancelation of the current loan, too. The new aspect is that in addition to the suspension of funding, they run the risk of the country’s exit from the Eurozone and the return to the drachma.

Different policy

The administration at Leoforos Syggrou dismisses this pressure and says that it is not a dilemma of conceeding to the memorandum or an exit from the euro, but whether our economy will be saved if we follow a different policy, adding that this is what Samaras will present in Zappeio.

They maintain that recent developments have proven that both the memorandum and the government have failed and have sank the Greek economy into a deeper recession, so they are in no position to impose either dilemmas or solutions.

Samaras will not change his position, considers a joke the government’s intention to ask for an increased parliamentary majority for a vote on their mid-term program, is sending a message in every direction that he will not vote for it and letting the government take responsibility for a recourse to early elections.

They believe that the internal government crisis is intensifying as shown by Loverdos’ move. “In an effort to distance himself, the Health minister is admitting the complete failure of the government, their inadequacies, their embarrassment and their vague and contradictory policies. The controversies and contradictions in the government mess are reaching avalanche status”, as ND spokesman Giannis Michelakis said in his statement.

He will see troika on Friday

A question for ND is the Troika’s stance and the volume of the pressure it will apply on ND to support the memorandum. Samaras will have a clear view of their intentions in his meeting with the auditors this Friday. In the Zappeio presentation, the party leadership will insist on a different mixture and on the need to change the terms.

The administration is using the examples of Ireland and Portugal, who bore the pressure and achieved much better terms than our country; low taxes for the Irish, wages and pensions for the Portuguese.

Samaras believes that Zappeio will create favorable conditions for his party and that it will be shown in the opinion polls toward the end of May.

If developments do not catch up with him, it is a matter of time before he asks for early elections, maintaining that besides not having a general consensus, governmental policy is mortgaging the country.
