Lavrio received a temporary accommodation settlement for asylum seekers by the Health Ministry. Immigrants, however, are refusing to move, which enhances the risk arising from their stay in unsuitable buildings.
Lavrio received a temporary accommodation settlement for asylum seekers by the Health Ministry. Immigrants, however, are refusing to move, which enhances the risk arising from their stay in unsuitable buildings.
According to the ministry statement, after meeting with the asylum seekers, the ministry leadership was committed to creating a settlement adjacent to the Temporary Accommodation Center for Asylum Seekers in Lavrio in order to move 100 of them.
The immediate need for rehousing resulted from the fact that building A, in which they are currently residing, is considered unsafe, according to an autopsy by technical services, and must be evacuated.
On Tuesday, the Health Ministry gave over the settlement built by the Municipal Corporation of Lavrio City on land granted by the municipality itself. The responsibility for the management and function of the settlement belongs to the Hellenic Red Cross.
The ministry took into account the demands of applicants for the layout of the site, such as the perimeter fence they had requested.
On 26/5/2011, the Kurdish asylum seekers were informed that their relocation to prefabricated bungalows will be beginning shortly .

“However, after further deliberation and a meeting with the Secretary General of Welfare, the relocation was denied, canceling any prior agreement which had taken place between the Health Ministry and the asylum seekers, which only prolongs the safety concerns of their living in an unsuitable building”, the ministry stated.
