“Revolt against the Troika and the memorandum”

Taking part in the open rally at Propylaea today, which was organized by academics, Mikis Theodorakis urged all Greek citizens to revolt against the memorandum and the Troika.

In his 20-minute speech, Theodorakis roused chills of enthusiasm in the almost 10.000 Athenians who flooded the Propylaea to join their voice with that of the leading Greek composer and the university professors, who asked for the uprising of the Greek people against the memorandum enslavement.

The participation of the people was impressive and essentially with people coming and going, the gathering at Propylaea became one with that in Syntagma. It is estimated that around 20.000 people have gathered in the city centre.

After singing “Ena to helidoni”, Mikis Theodorakis stressed that living people must give their blood too in order to save the country, even at this minute, from the attempted sell-out.

He accused the government of signing the memorandum without the people’s consent, and asked the people to cancel it with their protests. As he characteristically added: “If 2 millions of us Greeks gather and blow at them they will get out of here”. “Blow, blow so the cholera will go”, answered the gathered protesters.

Mikis Theodorakis called the Greek people to a popular uprising, demanding a peaceful revolution to overthrow the existing sick political system.

During his speech he greeted the movement of the young Indignant citixzens in Syntagma, which he characterized as a “genuine popular reaction”.

The event was launched by the rector of the university, Theodosis Pelegrinis, while professors Giorgos Kasimatis, Giorgos Katrougkalos, Notis Marias, Kostas Beis and Kostas Chrisogonos are also taking part.

At the same time, over 10.000 Indignant citizens are gathered at Syntagma Square, for the 7th consecutive day, protesting against the austerity measures and the governmental policy.

Amalias avenue is closed from Xenophontos street because of the gathering.
