With a logic that could be described as “whip-and-carrot”, the Ministry of the Environment is creating new legislation on unauthorised construction. It is a piece of legislation which on one hand reduces fines but on the other threaatens with demolitions.

The new Minister of the Environment, Mr.Papakostantinou, announced that the new legislation will be finalized in 15 days and will include : different categories of fines according to where and when the unauthorised structures were built, reduced fines for buildings after 2004 and an environmental equalizing tool so that they can deal with the strict laws that exist.

The Ministry is arranging a new procedure for the demolitions which are almost non-existent today. Asked about what the State will do about all the illegally built houses that have suddenly sprung up within forest boundaries in Marathonas, Penteli and Nea Penteli, he replied that they won't be included in the new legislation and will still be illegal.
