Firefighting forces are on a battle with a fire that broke out at 4:30 pm near Styrfaka village, 15km west of Lamia.
The fire spread immediately due to strong winds in the region, created a front that was over 300m and having burned low forest vegetation, moved threateningly toward the Styrfaka village.
Strong firefighting forces managed to control the front that was heading for the village, aided by two PZTs from the airport of Lamia, while the fire is continuing west toward the mountain.
Because the fire is at the cross point of the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line, the train traffic has stopped for security reasons. OSE officials are waiting for the green light from the fire department to allow the trains, which have been stuck at various points in the network, to move again.
The fire that broke out around 2:30pm at the Chania Akrotiri, in a bushy area in Kathiana, is still in progress. In its wake it has left about 3 acres and several beehives burned.
A fire also broke out around noon in Ergyrohori, Ioannina. 10 fire fighters with 4 vehicles and one division on foot are on the scene.
