Although we are going through an extended summer sales period, customers appear numb, proving unable or unwilling to buy goods.

Thus, the turnover on the commercial market in the first three weeks of the sales is at least 25 percent lower than last year, despite hefty discounts, the National Confederation of Greek Trade (ESEE) said.

Severely hit by the economic crisis and the deepening recession, Greek shop owners were looking to the sales to generate much-needed revenue, which had dropped sharply in recent months as a result of the austerity measures that have caused shoppers to restrict purchases to the bare necessities, and are thus offering reductions of as much as 70% off original prices.
