workers in all means of transport are on a 24hr strike and taxis have
stopped from 5am today until 5am Friday. The traffic ring in the centre
of Athens will not be in effect because of the strike.
Transport workers are protesting against redundancy and transfers and say they are ready to continue their actions, possibly having day-to-day meetings to decide upon their future, based on current developments.
Employees in education will also go on strike and join the protests along with students, as they will take part in the pan-Hellenic meeting at 1pm in Propylaea. Teachers will carry out a 24hr strike, while high school faculty will perform 3hr work stoppages.
Meanwhile, POE-OTA is inviting all local government employees to go on a work stoppage from 11.30am until the end of their shift, protesting against redundancy, layoffs and cuts in wages and pensions.
They will rally outside the offices of the federation at midday and from there will march to the interior ministry to protest against the possibility of dismissals from the narrow and broader public sector and the local authorities. They will then move to the Propylaea of the University of Athens to join the group of students and teachers.
Finally, the Air Traffic Controllers Association invites its members who work in establishments in Attica to participate in the work stoppage declared by ADEDY, from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, in order to facilitate employee participation in the rally for Education. Due to this strike, Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines have announced flight changes and cancellations.
