24hr strike in public sector and GoCs

24hr panhellenic strike by GSEE and ADEDY...

Greece is collapsing today due to the 24hr panhellenic strike by GSEE and ADEDY. There are serious problems for transportation, aviation, hospitals, schools, universities, ports and courts. GSEE and ADEDY will meet at 11am in Kalfthmonos and PAME at 10am in Omonoia.

OSE and suburban trains will remain docked, as the Panhellenic Federation of Railroad workers decided to take part in the strike.

Workers in the rest of the public transportation means will carry out work stoppages. Specifically, the Metro will operate regularly throughout the day, excluding service from Douk. Plakentias station to the Airport due to the strike of TRAINOSE.

ETHEL buses and trolleys are operating until 9pm when they will stop until the end of the shift, ISAP trains will run from 10am to 6pm, while the tram had a work stoppage from the start of the shift until 6am and will also stop at 12 midnight until the end of shift.

Serious problems are also expected in flights, as Air Traffic Controllers decided to join the strike. Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airways have already announced that all Wednesday flights are cancelled.

Public hospitals will operate with emergency stuff as doctors and workers are taking part in the 24hr strike, protesting against redundancy and cuts in wages and pensions. Personnel from Health Centres, EKAB, Treatment Centers for Chronic Diseases and Health Care Services will also join in.

Problems will arise for ports too, as the Federation of Port Employees (OMYLE) and the Dockworkers Union will strike as well. Since mid September, OMYLE has announced that ports are operating with grave staff shortages on a daily basis and are not funded by the state budget.

Many problems are expected for schools as well, since teachers have decided to participate in tomorrow’s demonstrations and those on October 19. TEI teachers will also join them, protesting about shortages in temporary teaching staff, and requesting the appointment of all elected members of teaching staff that have been waiting for the past two years, and the immediate announcement of the vacated positions due to retirement.

By decision of the steering committee of the Association of Lawyers, they will also participate in the nationwide strike. They are protesting about “the imposition of the trade tax fee, the special contribution fee, the supposed deregulation of the legal profession, the imposition of objective criteria for taxation, the reduction of the tax free threshold and the 23% VAT tax.”

Stores will shut down as ESEE is calling all traders to participate in the demonstrations that commence tomorrow, Wednesday, and will peak on October 19.

Workers in the public sector will also hold rallies and marches in Thessaloniki. More specifically, a gathering is planned for 10:30am at the Thessaloniki Labor Center, and members of the non-parliamentary Left will gather at Kamara square. PAME will gather in the Ancient Agora square at 11am.
