Garbage collection by private contractors begins

The Attica Region Director Yiannis Sgouros, affirming yesterday’s Regional Council decision and today’s current provision of emergency waste disposal issued by the Ministry of Health, commissioned - in compliance with all legal procedures- the project to three private companies, with a mandate to immediately start collecting garbage from sensitive areas which are prone to affecting public health.

The garbage trucks will begin the task of collection at the major Athens hospitals, main streets and schools in cooperation with the Prosecutor, Police and the Ministry of the Interior.

The Region Director is of the belief that everyone will contribute in order for logic to prevail for the benefit of society and the protection of its citizens.

As conveyed by protothema.gr journalists who are around the area of landfills in Liosia, shortly before 7pm a police car arrived on the scene, warning those who had been occupying the landfill to allow entry to the first garbage truck.

However, entrenched protesters in the landfill refused to leave, while they had provided themselves with planks and stones.

Note that on NATO Avenue, within walking distance, there are four riot police squads ready to take any action necessary.
