Since Friday night the trash collectors all over Attica have been back at work in an effort to remove the tonnes of trash that had been piling up all around Athens and Thessaloniki, after their POE-OTA unions decided to call off the strike.

The strike came to an end after the syndicates contacted the relevant Minister of the Interior, Harris Castanidis, who committed himself to starting an extensive discussion with them, beginning next week, on the problems their sector is facing and what their demands from the government are.

Also, Castanidis reassured the workers that since they have found common ground, riot police will be ordered to leave the Fili landfill. As for the mobilization orders received by private trash collection companies, the minister said they would be recalled as soon as the premier George Papandreou gets back from Brussels, where he will attend the EU Summit on Sunday.
