Greek-origin MEP of the German “Liberal Democrats”, George
Chatzimarkakis, appeared to be provocative in Skopje on Friday, not only
supporting the right of Skopjans to call themselves “Macedonians”, but
also statin unequivocally that the language spoken in Greece is…
“Macedonian”.
The German MEP went to Skopje as the co-chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee and had meetings with PM Nikola Gruevski and other officials. During his statements to local media he sent a greeting to Skopje, which he called “Macedonian”.
According to “MIA”, he specifically said: “I am glad to say some words to you in ‘Macedonian’, in ‘your language'”. When asked if he would be facing consequences in Greece because he spoke the language and recognized it as “Macedonian”, the MEP of Greek origin stated that he does not fear reactions because “many people in Greece speak 'Macedonian'” while he joked, stating that he expects more problems in Bulgaria, because of the pronunciation, since it reminds him of Bulgarian a bit more.
He promised to intervene with the European Commission to include the term “Macedonian” in the last progress report for relations between Skopje and the EU.
In Skopje, as is natural, the media “celebrated” the statements of the Greek-origin MEP. It is typical that the headline of SITEL was: “Chatzimarkakis spoke Macedonian”.
