The two alternative solutions would be that of Professor Vassilios Skouris, president of the Court of Justice, and the one of the banker, Vassilis Rapanos.

The deadlock the procedure has reached and has remained in for days now, as well as the havoc caused by the name of Loukas Papademos, has made various PASOK members ask for a person of broad consensus.

George Papandreou was expected at the presidential mansion after 2 in the afternoon, a meeting that might have to wait until 5 this afternoon according to latest information, to present the name of the new premier to the President of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias.

At around 10 on Wednesday morning, all members of the PASOK cabinet handed in their written resignations.

Through a letter of his, Venizelos underlined that “accepting my position was an act of national duty and not one I pursued”.
