As the data published by EL.STAT. shows, the unemployment rate climbed to 18,4% in August 2011, from 12,2% in August 2010 and 16,5% in July 2011.

The unemployed increased by 294.845 compared to August 2010 (48.1%) and by 87.677 compared to July 2011 (10.7%). Thus, they reached 907.953, while the economically inactive population stood at 4.403.503 individuals.
The number of the employed in August was estimated at 4.034.537, which means it decreased by 364.353 compared to August 2010 (8.3%) and by 105.469 compared to July 2011 (2.5%).
The highest unemployment rate is recorded among young people aged 15-24 (43,5%). In women, the unemployment rate rose to 22,3% in August from 15,5% a year earlier, while for men it increased to 15,5% from 9,9%.
By region, the highest unemployment rates are recorded in Western Macedonia (23,1%), Central Macedonia (20,7%) and Western Greece (20,6%). The lower rates are in the Ionian Islands (12,8%), Epirus (13%) and the Northern Aegean (15%).
