PASOK will have elections from its base in January

There has only been one thing in George Papandreou’s mind since leaving Maximos Mansion: vindication. He does not want to go down in history as “the problem”.

In contrast, he wants to be recognized as the first one who saw the international dimensions of the debt crisis and suggested measures such as a tax on transactions in financial markets and Eurobonds. So, he wishes for two things: the effectiveness of the PSI, which is the result of his own effort, and the… resurrection of PASOK. Many are the thoughts on how these things will occur:

    * several colleagues are telling him to remain as president and leave after a second chance. They add that for some years Greece will probably have coalition governments, so the drop in rates does not remove all his political power
    * one the other hand, several members are asking him to pave the way for his succession so that a new system of authority can take over the fate of PASOK and make a better attempt to get the party out of the crisis
 
After yesterday’s meeting with Venizelos, information mentions that the PASOK president will commence the succession procedures, taking on an international campaign for the necessary measures.

The race was on once it was announced that next week will see the meetings of the institutions, the political council and the former government committee in order to have collective decisions on the matter.

Venizelos declared his presence through his associates and all relevant processes. And he responded to the intraparty troika saying he does not accept suggestions and there are no rings. Still, many executives’ estimates hit the press, saying that "Vangelis will not be a candidate," or that "he will resign", followed by information about the intentions of George Papandreou to remain in his position and about PASOK reaching the breakup stage.
