Papademos anxious about the 80-billion-euro installment

Within the coming days, the Greek prime minister is to meet with the rest of the political leaders so as to discuss the life span of his government. This is what he himself announced earlier on Wednesday during the cabinet meeting.

The atmosphere is particularly heavy inside governmental circles, evident of the outcome of the final decision made by the Labour minister, Yiorgos Koutroumanis, regarding the supplementary pension cuts.

Speaking on the matter, minister of Transport and LAOS party member, Makis Voridis, said that his party insists and has expressed the view that the government should enjoy more time in power, specifically the whole span that the former government under Papandreou was supposed to cover. For this reason, if the present leadership remains in power until mid February and with certain jurisdiction, then LAOS does not okay the cut in pensions as this is not part of this scheme’s responsibilities.

Coming back to that, Papademos underlined the need for wider cooperation and agreement between all government parties, because if these are not reached then there is a high probability that problems connected with the next financial aid package may arise. If, as a result, these problems become a reality, Greece will yet again be in a difficult position when it negotiates the 80-billion tranche.

Government vice-president and Finance minister Evangelos Venizelos pointed out the fact that the conditions under which the new loan will be discussed will depend on the reforms that should or will take place.
