Former president of the Bosnian Serbs Radovan Karadžić has asked the International Court of Justice to order Karolos Papoulias, the president of the Greek Republic, to testify at his trial.
As reported by Dow Jones Newswires, Karadžić is now asking for a subpoena for the Greek president so that he can be subjected to an interview by Peter Robinson, the legal advisor of the former Serb-Bosnian president.
Karadžić claims to have repeatedly called the Greek president and the Greek government for Papoulias to appear as a defense witness, which the president reportedly refuses to do. This is why Karadžić has now submitted a written request to the court requesting the issuing of a subpoena for Papoulias to give a "one-hour interview in his office to the advocate of the accused Serb," and do so by the beginning of April.
Karadžić claims that when he was foreign minister between 1993 and 1996, Papoulias played a leading role during peace negotiations in Bosnia and therefore could testify on different meetings during the period in question and submit all evidence that could prove the Serb’s innocence, above all in terms of the main accusation against him concerning the shelling of Sarajevo market on 5 February 1994, which killed 67 people.
At his written request, Karadžić says that "because of the religious and historical ties between Greece and Serbia, Papoulias was among the few respondents that the Bosnian-Serbs trusted and could talk to in confidence and sincerity."
