New data in PASOK with the alliance of Venizelos-Loverdos

The broader alliance formed in favor of Evangelos Venizelos’ candidacy for the PASOK leadership creates a new status in the internal situation of the party.

Andreas Loverdos’ recognition of Venizelos' lead surprised many inside the movement and especially the environment of George Papandreou, who did not expect this kind of development.

Now, Venizelos’ candidacy brings together not only those who supported him in 2007, but powerful Papandreou supporters and other players as well, such as Kostas Skandalidis, who worked intensely and persistently in the past weeks towards the alliance of the two men.

Following the agreement between Venizelos-Loverdos, some critical questions demand an answer:
   
- what will happen in the PASOK PG meeting on Thursday? Logically the situation seems to be winding down. But the power gap that exists in the party remains, and everybody expects Papandreou to answer as to how PASOK will proceed and more specifically what the PG will do
   
- what is Papandreou going to do? Will he remain a mere spectator of the processes, as he committed himself to doing, or will he somehow position himself against the developments, given that some of his associates had ensured his remaining the party leader?
   

- will the procedures for the election of the new leader be accelerated in view of March 18, which is defined as the day of intraparty elections for the new president, so that PASOK can be ready for the national elections?
   
- lastly and perhaps most essentially, will there be another candidacy against Venizelos? Reports say that ​​there are processes in place aimed at coming up with an opponent, most probably Luka Katseli, but it is far from certain that they will succeed.
