In the morning, an elderly woman died when she was swept by the rushing waters while trying to get out of her house. The incident happened outside Pyrgos, in Kolireikes Parages at Varvasaina, on the road to Salmoni. The unfortunate 80yo woman was trapped on the wire fence by the rushing waters. Four streams had overflowed in the same area and the volume of water was such that it prevented cars from traversing the Tripoli-Pyrgos highway.
The life of a baby was also put in danger when the Enippeas river overflowed, while there have been many evacuation incidents both inside and outside Pyrgos.
A big evacuation operation is in progress in the Lanthi area with help from Super Puma helicopters, firefighters and police, because of the landslides from heavy rainfall that hit the region throughout the night.
Just before 12 pm an order was issued for the evacuation of the hospital in Pyrgos, as basements were flooded with water causing damage and power loss.
The storm that broke out at midnight yesterday has caused widespread flooding in Pyrgos and its surrounding areas, with the rain water reaching over 70 cm in some cases. Houses, shops, cars and roads are flooded, while the OSE railway station premises have turned into a vast lake.
