About 1,000 cases of fraud in 58 gold exchanges and pawnshops were discovered during the SDOE-conducted raids in recent days.
Overall, SDOE checked 93 gold exchange stores the last few days and found that 63% of these were illegal, ie nearly two out of three.
Indeed, the Financial Crime Unit (SDOE) informed Police services to proceed with inspections, since a host of evidence indicates that some of these shops are acting as fences from burglaries.
The crime unit’s members are estimating that behind many of these stores there is an extensive money laundering organization. According to the same sources, the tax shortfall for the Greek government each month is in the order of tens of millions.
