A call to arms in order to make ND the majority current in Greek society, was made today by Mr. Antonis Samaras.

He reiterated his consistent position that elections should take place in the near future and called on everyone, underlining that: “Our party is the only serious and sustained political force in the country, and the elections which will take place will be the most crucial after those of ‘74”.

Of MPs who were kicked out of the party last week, Mr. Samaras stated that he would be happy if they returned to the party, as long as they demonstrate that they are adhering to the party line.

Beyond this, he also opened his door to all those who had left the party, speaking of a call to arms in view of the elections. In the battle after the elections everyone should be together “and not just out for themselves”, he characteristically stated, and added: “Noone is left over and we must bridge a gap, the great battle of development starts immediately after the elections. The Greek people are being tested and Greece is hurting. We must stand our ground, the fight for recovery is now afoot”.

As for the agreement that was obtained, he estimated that Greece won some time and some room to emerge from the crisis and supported that three major differences and one similarity can be found compared with the first Memorandum.

According to Antonis Samaras, now that there is a “haircut” of the Greek debt, the lending rate and the repayment of debt shifts over time. “Another similarity is keeping the same recipe, the third pillar is that of development, and it is missing”. He also underlined that the prerequisites for development exist. Among other things, Mr. Samaras reiterated the need to issue Eurobonds and stated that Europe is already facing the increasing number of voices of those who argue that the antidote to the crisis is measures of development.

The main pillar which can support the Greek economy for Antonis Samaras is the use of the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone, which he said he spoke of when he visited Cyrpus. He noted the need to restore political stability in the country and set as his immediate goals the halting of recession and strengthening of social cohesion.
