National elections possibly on May 6

Throughout the previous weeks, European leaders and political officials in Athens had been talking about the extension of Papademos’ government.

This was also discussed at yesterday’s summit. But the decision was made in a different place and according to the PM’s associates, “Samaras persuaded Merkel of the need for immediate elections”.

The same sources indicate that the basic argument of the ND president was that if there were no electoral release, things would be further pushed into extremes. Reportedly, he gave assurances as for the policy he will follow when in government, given that ND is the top party in all polls.

However, discussions on Papademos’ political future are continuing. The PM has dismissed the idea of forming a party before the elections, but it is quite possible he will do so in the future. He will take his time, unless the electoral result requires a coalition government and there is no PM from one of the leaders, to demonstrate the performance of the new government. According to his partners, “this is the crucial factor that will allow or discourage the creation of new parties”.

Regarding the time of elections, April 29 is still on the table, but since it is too close to Easter many are suggesting May 6 as a more appropriate date. And ND does not seem to be troubled by this date. All this of course, provided that the pending haircut and loan agreement issues will conclude without any trouble.
