In his meeting with Alexis Tsipras, Evangelos Venizelos will make every
effort to convince the SYRIZA president to form a government, with
himself or another person
of the Left as prime minister, with the sole condition for the support of PASOK beig the country's stay in the euro.
However, if Alexis Tsipras does not do it, the PASOK president will ask the President of the Republic to call for a political leaders’ council immediately. That is, he will not use his own mandate to avert the possibility of the country losing more time. "We can not play a game of expediencies to charge each other with the repeat elections, nor can some of us start campaigning now," said the head of PASOK. "This is not the mandate of the people and it violates the Constitution," he adds. The council has two options: either to decide upon elections with an interim government or form an ecumenical one.
Knowing the economic situation, Evangelos Venizelos is in a state of intense anxiety regarding the bond that expires on May 15. He has talked to Philippos Sahinidis to consult the leaders because these are bonds from investors who refused to participate in the bond exchange program. Greece has to choose between not paying and risking a credit event or paying and reducing its ability to pay salaries and pensions. At this point, the money in the State coffers will last until the end of June, mid-July perhaps, and that is if the State does not pay any “suppliers” in the meantime, because there should be no expectations for the next tranches of the support program without forming a stable government first.
