Samaras calls for a Centre-Right front

ND president Antonis Samaras has asked for the support of the Greek people and all the right-wing parties to safeguard the European course of the country and change the financial policy of Greece

ND president Antonis Samaras has asked for the support of the Greek people and all the right-wing parties to safeguard the European course of the country and change the financial policy of Greece.

Speaking at the party’s Committee meeting, Samaras said that “before the polls we warned of the possible governance void and now we must do everything in our power to bring stability back”.

He added that only yesterday he appeared willing to support Tsipras but the latter turned down his offer. Moreover, the ND head said that Tsipras’ proposal regarding the renegotiation of the bailout deal will lead Greece out of the common currency union and certain powers inside and outside the country that want this to happen are aiding this gol, with Tsipras’ announcement playing exactly this role. He hopes that by the time the two of them meet later this afternoon, Tsipras will have come to his senses, finally agreeing to give it a try. If not, said Samaras, then it will be a proof that he himself wishes to create an anti-European front, but ND is the only stable power which could guarantee a European future. After all, “the Greek people asked us neither to destroy the country nor to exit the EU”.

He announced he will try to form a centre-right coalition with the help of the people and his fellow politicians, setting aside all existing disagreements.

Thus, ND is in discussions with LAOS, DRASI and Democratic Alliance in order to try and find a common axis of cooperation. However, if the plan proves successful, the danger lying ahead is that ND might lose more supporters, voters of the traditional Right, who might think the party wants to adopt a pro-Memorandum character. The Independent Greeks party remains out of the question for Samaras as from the very beginning, he had said he won’t agree to work with “traitors”.

Two former “blue” premiers, Costas Mitsotakis and Costas Karamanlis, are also in the spotlight, with the latter saying “we must avoid the gap in governance at any expense, and form a government”.

Apparently, everyone says ND is playing for time and no one wants a second round of elections. Thursday morning will find Samaras in meetings with close associates so as to assess the situation and make up their minds on how to act from here on.
