N. Chanias: Even an hour of SYRIZA rule would be a disaster

A letter sent by a member and candidate MP of the party, stating that he is leaving the party, is getting SYRIZA into new troubles.

The letter is published today in the newspaper "Ta Nea", SYRIZA member and candidate for the party Panhellenic Coordinating Committee in Corinth, Nikos Chanias, writes to the secretary of the SYNASPISMOS Central Committee, Dimitris Vitsas. "Dear Dimitris, I am now confident that even an hour of SYRIZA rule will be disastrous for Greece and the future of our children."

Nikos Chanias says he trembles at the prospect of SYRIZA taking control. "It is shameful and dishonest to gamble our future, taking advantage of the righteous wrath of society, betting on the non-existent chance that our lenders are bluffing, without suggesting anything for the opposite case, especially when you know that your maximalist and surreal positions are not in touch with reality."

He concludes that he cannot continue participating in a party whose government perspective "is extremely dangerous for the Greek people and their future."

SYRIZA issued a harsh statement, in which it calls Nikos Chanias’ letter "immoral and inexplicable".

Corinth SYRIZA speaks of an "inexplicable and immoral act" by Chanias, noting that he had never expressed reservations about party politics either before or after the elections on May 6, and indeed he is again a candidate in the Sunday elections and also took active part in all the campaigning activities.

The statement speaks of "surprise and anger" about the message of said candidate, and declares that "he also sent us a letter, which was sent to Dimitris Vitsas as well, secretary of the Central Committee of SYNASPISMOS of similar unacceptable content."

"It is with surprise that we dealt with a personal problem involving his defeat in the May 6 elections:

-   Because before the May 6 election, and especially afterwards, Chanias had not expressed the slightest reservation about the SYRIZA proposals

-    Because he was an active participant with proposals in all pre-election meetings of the local SYRIZA organization

-   Because he is again on the SYRIZA ballot in Corinth for the June 17 elections, despite the option he had to seek an exemption

-     Because after the elections, on May 27, he wrote clearly stating his belief that the SYRIZA program and voting for it are the only way out for the country

-     Because until Wednesday 5/6 he participated warmly in the SYRIZA Corinth pre-election campaigns (Wednesday 5/6: speech at Diminio, Tuesday 4/6: visit to Titani, Bozika, Kastraki and speech at Daphne, Monday 3/6: participation in the central event in Corinth, etc.)

For all of the above we believe that:

-     Chanias’ stance is an inexplicable and immoral act that does not suit the behavior of any person in politics, let alone anyone who says is an active citizen of the Left

-    We wonder as to what happened in the last 5 days to change Nikos Chanias' political views

-   Because in telephone communications with members of SYRIZA Corinth, he mentioned his placing in the May 6 elections and not any political issues

-  This desertion brutally offends everyone who supported him in the May 6 elections (2,100 Corinthians), all the SYRIZA voters in the county and all the democratic citizens of our county whom he was called to represent in parliament

-  Being afraid when faced with the burden of conflict is critical and not all people can endure it, but to reproach everyone still fighting at the front line creates strange and unanswered questions that can only be answered in terms of an apostasy"

Addressing the people of Corinth, SYRIZA asserts that "ethos and fighting spirit continue to characterize all of us who struggle in Corinth, for the prevalence of the SYRIZA program in the upcoming elections. It stresses that "such practices strengthen us and assure us that the reversal of corruption and subjugation are closer than ever and that during the next few days we will be met with a fiercer war. But those who follow such practices must know that they cannot intimidate us because our ideas and our principles are not negotiable."
