New problems with the Troika

The statements by Finance minister Yannis Stournaras are characteristic of the heavy climate in the meeting. "We are trying to finalize the set of measures and the representatives of our lenders have once again requested clarifications. The discussions and consultations between the two sides are ongoing."

The PM's meeting with the Troika representatives on Monday afternoon ended without result and under rushed procedures.

The statements by Finance minister Yannis Stournaras are characteristic of the heavy climate in the meeting. "We are trying to finalize the set of measures and the representatives of our lenders have once again requested clarifications. The discussions and consultations between the two sides are ongoing."

A Government official spoke of difficult discussions with the Troika. The same sources reported that the government is trying to specialize the measures and denied any problems in the consultations.

Information from the Troika side mentions that the side of or the lenders reject the structural measures entirely and insist on closing the package with revenues generated from additional cuts in salaries and pensions.

Close associates of the PM said that while negotiating with representatives of the Troika in Greece, the government is also taking part in political negotiations on a higher level.

Antonis Samaras is in constant communication with both his European counterparts and senior EU officials. The government’s aim is to comply with the schedules and close the package by the next Eurogroup. They feel confident that the Troika meeting with Stournaras will soon be repeated and that in the coming days there will be a meeting of the political leaders that support the government.

After meeting with the Troika, Samaras was scheduled to inform PASOK president Evangelos Venizelos and Democratic Left president Fotis Kouvelis.
