During the parliamentary meeting for the establishment of a preliminary committee, Yorgos Papakonstantinou started his speech with a clear confession of guilt which afterwards he attempted to refute.

Regarding the handling of the Lagarde list, the former minister admitted that "it is objectively clear that I bear political responsibility for this. Obviously there should have been more careful management of the situation. And I am very sorry that this failure of mine has given rise to challenging the overall great effort made by the government at that time."

At another point he confessed that "if there is responsibility, any responsibility, it rests solely on me, no one else." Afterwards, however, he unfolded his unsound argument, claiming he is the victim of a political plot and that the "political system" is trying to load all its sins on his back.

Without answering about the substance of the case, without being convincing about the reasons he copied the CD and mostly without answering to everything he is being accused of by the 6 political parties that have called for his referral, he argued that "I'm not just innocent. I am clearly the subject of a vulgar incrimination effort."

And in order to create some confusion and escape from the Lagarde list case, he wondered, "it is not the political, business and media establishment of the political changeover that is to blame. Nor are all those who were key players in creating the virulence that brought Greece to the brink of bankruptcy. We should blame those who were asked to do all the hard work in order for the country to avoid the worst."
