Schäuble: What I said to Mr. Tsipras

"When one has to solve structural problems and the solution must be sustainable, one cannot avoid the fact that for a while there will be adjustment procedures that could be painful," German Finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble said, adding he said the same thing to the SYRIZA president Alexis Tsipras, whom he met last week in Berlin.

Regarding the adjustment processes, "this is true not only for Greece but also Ireland, Spain and Portugal, as well as for Germany," Schäuble said in a simultaneous interview with the German «Sueddeutsche Zeitung» and French «Le Monde», on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty.

Asked if he was moved by Tsipras’ description of the social consequences of a strict austerity program, the German finmin replied: "Believe me when I say this. I know that the management of the crisis in Greece demands a lot of its people, it is clear in a painful manner for me, no matter who comes to see me. However, Tsipras knows that both France and Germany help Greece significantly."

Asked if the SYRIZA president told him this, he explained that Tsipras "has his views on resolving the crisis and that is legitimate. I do not meddle in the Greek domestic political debates. The measures of the austerity program have been decided and must be implemented."
