A planned process of destruction of ammunition by three experienced Greek Army bomb squad members turned into a tragedy
A planned process of destruction of ammunition by three experienced Greek Army bomb squad members turned into a tragedy.
For unknown reasons, the neutralization of ammunition proved anything but a routine task, resulting in the death of one lieutenant and the wounding two other military officers.
The accident took place at the Army Firing Range "Psilos Stalos" at Didimoticho. Three deminers had undertaken the process of destroying old ammunition. During τηε neutralization of one grenade however there was an explosion, which caused fatal injuries to a lieutenant, aged 47 years.
It also injured one Major and one permanent Staff Sergeant (Long Term Volunteer) who are hospitalized in Alexandroupoli but not in serious condition.
