Unemployment in Greece reaches 26% in the 3rd quarter

The number of unemployed increased by 5.2% compared with the previous quarter and by 26.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, and amounted to 1,295,535

The unemployment rate in Greece rose to 26% in the fourth quarter of 2012 from 24.8% in the third quarter, as announced by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

The number of unemployed increased by 5.2% compared with the previous quarter and by 26.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, and amounted to 1,295,535.

According to the ELSTAT figures, the female unemployment rate stood at 29.7% and is significantly higher than in males which is at 23.3%.

The highest unemployment rate is observed among young people aged 15-24 years (57.8%), and in young women even reaches 65.0%.

The percentage of unemployed who have never worked in the past is at 24.0% of all unemployed and the long term unemployed (those looking for work from 12 months or more, whether they are young or old unemployed) represent the 65.3 %.

The unemployment rate of people with foreign citizenship is greater than that of the Greek nationals (36.9% vs. 25.0%). Also, 72.3% of foreign nationals are economically active, which is significantly higher than that of Greeks who stand at 51.7%.

At the regional level the highest unemployment rate is found in western Macedonia with 30.1% and in central Greece with 28.6%. The lowest percentage is observed in southern Aegean with 18.0% and in the Ionian with 17.2%.

The distribution of unemployment based on education is as follows: the highest unemployment rate is observed in people who have not attended school (41.9%) followed by those who have completed a three-part Secondary Education (30.9%). The lowest rates were observed in those with a doctorate or master's degree (14.3%) and tertiary graduates (16.6%).

Of the total unemployed seeking paid employment, 42.5% are looking for a full time job, while 47.9% are willing to work part time. 9.6% is looking for part time or do not care if they find a part time job or a full time one.

Employment declined by 1.5% compared to the previous quarter and by 6.4% compared to the fourth quarter of 2011.
