Major operation by the Hellenic Coast Guard to locate 10 Syrian sailors (two were found dead) aboard a cargo ship that sank off the coast of Methoni at dawn Monday after a collision with another freighter.

It is the Piri Reis cargo ship under a Cook Islands flag that had a total of 17 sailors from Syria and was carrying fertilizer.

Piri Reis collided for unknown reasons at 5:43 a.m. Monday with another freighter, Kon South, under an Antigua and Barbados flag with 16 sailors, all in good health.

The collision occurred 78km. southwest of the island of Sapienza on the south coast of Messinia.

Four sailing boats, two Coast Guard floaters, a C-130 aircraft and a Sikorski helicopter are involved in the operation for the locating of the 10 sailors.

The weather conditions in the area are good.
