Six arrests and 12 adducts for weapons found on a speedboat in Chios

Investigations in Athens, Thessaloniki and Korinthos - Police talks about a possible terrorist arrest - 2 Turks among the arrestees aboard the boat

Greek Police is facing a case of weapons trafficking and possible terrorism. The case began unraveling Tuesday morning when the Coast Guard boat spotted a 7-meters speedboat between Chios and Oinouses, approached for a routine check and found it was carrying 2 anti-tank mortars, 4 grenades, 2 pistols, bullets and a large number of ready-made explosive devices. According to sources from the Hellenic General Staff who spoke to protothema.gr, guns do not bear serial numbers and are not from the arsenal of the Greek army.

All four passengers, 2 Greeks and 2 Turks, have been arrested and apparently the boat was destined for Turkey. At a later point two more arrests were made in Chios. According to politischios.gr the 2 men were arrested when harbor officers considered their moves them close to where the boat was anchored as suspicious and believe them to be two main accomplices of the arrested Greeks. A life jacket, rope and other objects were found in the car trunk.

Investigations in Athens, Thessaloniki and Korinthos

After authenticating the personal information of the arrestees, the Anti-Terrorist unit started investigations in homes that were rented by these people in Athens, Korinthos and Thessaloniki. Reportedly, there were 12 adducts of Greeks and foreigners from Exarheia and Thessaloniki. A solidarity committee for Kurdish prisoners is housed in Tzavela Street in Exarheia.

According to information, one of the Greeks who is 22 years old, a student at the School of Merchant Shipping in Aspropyrgos, said he was recruited with 500 euros to take the speedboat to Turkey and that he did not know what they were carrying.

The greatest interest for the Greek officers lies with the two Turkish nationals, who are known for armed action in their country, but also a Greek male partner. They estimate that these weapons and explosives were intended for operations that were going to be carried out in Turkey.
