The new system is on trial run in just 4 Tax Offices but from March it is expected to be extended to all the Tax Offices
The instructions for electronic seizing of money from bank accounts of debtors are now being issued at a very rapid pace.
Although since December 12 the new system is on trial run in just 4 Tax Offices for debtors belonging to the Piraeus, A’ Athens, Ilioupouli and Kifissia Tax Offices, within a month the tax auditors have completed more than 200 seizures and the number is still rising.
Finance Ministry sources said there are still some problems, especially by cooperative banks - and not only - that are trying to delay the seizure process to give time to "good customers" to save what they can from the "long arm" of the tax authorities.
They believe, however, that by April the system will be implemented in full operation in all 120 Tax Offices in the country.
Initially at least, the electronic audit targets those who owe and do not pay over 50,000 euros in taxes, and there is compelling evidence that they have assets and deposits.
