An American tourist in ICU after being injured by a firecracker in Santorini

Two Greeks were arrested - Two other Americans and a Greek are being treated for burns in Venizelos Hospital

One of the three American tourists who were injured yesterday by the firecracker explosion that took place in the courtyard of a church in Oia, minutes after the Resurrection, has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Venizelos Hospital.

The woman underwent surgery in Venizelos Hospital. The doctors declared her condition critical, as apart from the wounds to the abdomen she also suffered burns on different parts of her body. However, doctors are optimistic about her recovery.

Three other people, two Americans and a 50 year old Greek businessman who were also injured by the firecracker explosion in the courtyard of the church of Our Lady of the Akathist Hymn were also transferred to the same hospital.

"I do not know what was used in the firecracker, but it was very dangerous. Fortunately we have a medical aircraft and they could be transported to the hospital quickly" said to protothema.gr the mayor of Thera, Anastasios Zorzos.

Two arrests by Hellenic Police

Two Greeks, aged 34 and 23 were arrested for throwing the firecracker.
They were charged with causing bodily harm through an explosion and breaching the weapons law.
The two perpetrators will be led to the Prosecutor of Naxos.
