Greeks are proven irresponsible when it comes to the HIV virus and STD’s...
We are in the year 2010, but the new AIDS victim numbers are rising, as are the numbers of syphilis victims.
More specifically, according to statistics presented by the Greek Institute for the Study and Prevention of AIDS, figures for HIV patients for the year 2010 are higher than last year’s for the second year running. According to scientists, this is an unfortunate yet expected turnout since there is practically no campaign on HIV prevention.
In 2010, newborns tested HIV positive and the number of patients will rise by 610 more than the 10.450 HIV positive patients in 2009. For a decade now the new victims of HIV have been around 450 per year. But in the last two years this increase has surpassed 600 new patients p.a.
Greeks unfortunately still consider AIDS a taboo subject, and although more than 10,000 people are recorded as AIDS patients, there are many more living in the darkness of their illness.
Syphilis
This STD seems to have plagued Greece since the ancient times and although it declined in the last decade, during the past two years there has been an exceptional rise of the disease. The same applies to other STD’s such as herpes, HPV (the human papilloma virus that can cause cervical cancer) and hepatitis.
In 1980, four hundred syphilis cases were recorded. In 1990 only 2 cases were recorded, by 2000 there was another rise and there were 70 cases recorded, and unfortunately in 2010 we are counting up to 500 new cases.
