Keratea area resembling a battlefield

Early Saturday morning the Special Police Force (MAT) were guarding the grounds marked for the new landfill.

20 team,s together with the district attorney where there since morning. Although it was a very cold day, many people living in the neighboring areas were there to demonstrate against the location of this landfill.

At 3 AM three, heavy vehicles ready to prepare the site were there and people, as well as the former Mayor, were there and started to quarrel and clash with the employees of the company that is responsible for building the site.

According to sources a fire broke out, thought to have been set by the inhabitants of the area to stop all procedures. The vehicles, however, did not leave and what will be decided for the Keratea landfill remains to be seen.

This is a case that has been dragging on since 2005. Today the government has shown its decision to start the procedure due to the upcoming fines from the European Union.

There has been extensive communication between Ministers Ragousis, Papoutsis and Cultural Minister Pavlos Geroulanos, since the site has been labeled a Class A Archaeological Site Protected Zone.

The Municipality of the area is determined not to allow for the landfill to be located there, but the government is also determined to go ahead with the plan.
