The swine flu comes from… Kimolos and Kalymnos!

Tens of cases on the two islands, while four are confirmed as H1N1

The first new cases of the flu have appeared on the islands of Greece.

After the December attack of the H1N1 virus in north and central Europe, our country is the new addition to the catalogue.

According to information of protothema.gr, tens of cases of influenza-like syndrome have appeared in Kimolos and Kalymnos, but so far only four of them have been caused by Η1Ν1.

At the Center for Infection Control and Prevention of Diseases (KELPNO) the alarm has sounded since Monday January3, as the network of Health Centres - Regional Clinics briefed the Center on dozens of influenza cases. The laboratory analyses of clinical samples identified the H1N1 virus on at least four occasions.

In fact in Kalymnos, the virus has appeared mainly in children.

The «awakening» of the H1N1 virus in our country was a matter of days. Scientists were counting backwards the elapsed time for the start of the period of the seasonal flue, which this year is dominated by the H1N1 virus.

As Mr Sotiris Tsiordas, Assistant Professor of Pathology-Infections at the university of Athens, had stated in protothema.gr (http://www.protothema.gr/health-and-life/article/?aid=97639), «The continuous monitoring of the disease in Greece shows that the activity of seasonal flu usually starts to increase in January and peaks in February - March. An exception was last year’s period due to the movement of the pandemic strain».
